My Wii Slot does not illuminate?

when I turn it on it does but when I eject or insert a disc it doesn't. Oh and also it doesn't illuminate when I have new mail please help. And what it Standby Connection? When i have my Wii off the light is orange and when i turn it off it's red and doesn't get hot so if you could please help me with these two questions I would really appreciate it. Thanks! = ]
