A question for social liberals!?

What is it about abortion that makes some of them consider it a sacrificial rite through which only the killing of an unborn child can truly liberate a women from the clutches of paternalism? This is a question from Cal Thomas, who writes a political column! I'd be interested in intelligent answers, not rants!
