Astro question concerning quasars?

In a quasar spectrum there are deep absorption lines due to gas clouds in our line of vision. Hydrogen atoms in these clouds absorb photons from the quasar. Why are the absorption lines due to these clouds at a shorter wavelength than the emission line from the quasar itself?????
